Jesus changes cultural perceptions
He said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’.” John 4:16-17 NASB
The words of Jesus are to the point. You want the water, but you have to see how thirsty you are.
How does this woman view herself? She knows her past and how messed up it is. She also realizes Jesus knows too. Her decisions thus far in life have taken where she may not have wanted to go. Now, that she’s been confronted about her sin, what is she willing to do about it.
She sets aside the notion of how she got there and focuses on where to go now. That’s repentance. She trusts Jesus enough to change her lifestyle. Instead of the woman who has been married multiple times and living with a man who isn’t her husband now, she looks at herself as a new woman.
Life changed drastically for her. Instead of the loose woman of questionable choices, she is a woman transformed by the power of Jesus Christ. Now, she looks at herself without guilt and shame as a woman of the world and sees a changed woman set apart for a new life.
