Jesus came to counter the culture

There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” John 4:7

When Jesus asked for a drink from the woman at the well, He turned the culture of the day on its head. We already know he was near a city where there was hatred between Jews and Samaritans. Now, He is actually speaking to a Samaritan woman, so He has doubly upset the norm. Even the woman states the obvious to Jesus.

Here is the point of the conversation: Jesus spoke to the woman of Samaria. He looked beyond her race and her gender as if they were never even there. And to Him, neither of those cultural norms mattered. He saw a woman who needed to hear the message of hope, salvation, and encouragement.

We, too, need to look beyond our cultural differences to see how we can bring that same message to our world. It’s not going to be easy; we will probably have to step outside of our comfort zones to share the Gospel of Jesus. The people we have conversations with need to hear the same message Jesus shared with the woman of Samaria. Everyone needs to hear the Good News no matter their ethnicities, gender, or any other cultural division.
